History & Character

The Story of Lakeway

Lakeway began as a resort community in 1963 when developers saw the potential of Lake Travis's dramatic Hill Country shoreline. The original Lakeway Inn (now the Lakeway Resort and Spa) became a destination for Austinites seeking weekend escapes, and by the 1980s permanent residents began building homes along the coves and ridges overlooking the lake. Incorporated in 1990, Lakeway has grown into a full-service city while retaining its resort DNA — multiple golf courses designed by Jack Nicklaus and others, tennis centers, marinas, and miles of waterfront trails. Lake Travis itself stretches 63 miles with over 271 miles of shoreline, offering everything from sailing and wakeboarding to cliff-jumping at Hippie Hollow. The Oasis, perched on a bluff above the lake, has served legendary sunsets since 1982.
