Georgetown

The Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas

History & Character

The Story of Georgetown

Georgetown was founded in 1848 and named for George Washington Glasscock, who donated the land for the original townsite. The Williamson County Courthouse — a Classical Revival masterpiece completed in 1911 with Ionic columns, a copper dome, and a four-faced clock tower — anchors what locals proudly call "The Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas." The surrounding 40-block historic district features remarkably intact Victorian-era commercial buildings with pressed-metal facades, cast-iron columns, and ornate cornices. Georgetown's Sun City community (one of the largest active-adult developments in Texas) brought a population boom in the 2000s, but the city has carefully preserved its historic character. The San Gabriel River cuts through town, feeding the popular Blue Hole Park swimming area.
