History & Character

The Story of Cedar Park

Cedar Park's transformation from a quiet crossroads community into one of Austin's most sought-after suburbs is a Texas growth story. Named for the groves of mountain cedar (Ashe juniper) that dot the limestone landscape, the area remained rural until the 1980s when suburban development pushed north along US 183. The opening of the H-E-B Center in 2009 gave the city its own sports and entertainment anchor, home to the Texas Stars (AHL hockey) and Austin Spurs (NBA G League). With 47 parks spanning over 1,000 acres and 31 miles of trails, Cedar Park has built its identity around outdoor living. The Austin Steam Train, which departs from downtown Cedar Park, connects residents to the area's railroad heritage.
